Introduction
Hello, my name is John Kratina, welcome to my E-Portfolio. I have taught for several years in public and private schools. Presently I am utilizing my teaching skills in a government office. I am completing my degree, Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in Educational Technology. The intent of this website is to share my E-Portfolio in fulfillment of my Master's Capstone component. I have posted assignments, papers, educational web links, multimedia presentations and other course projects. The content reflects how I have successfully implemented the five International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards. Each page of this E-Portfolio contains examples of my work that correlates with a specific ISTE Standard.
Today’s young people are accustom to seeing all the advances in multimedia technology each and every day.
Computer generated graphics in video games and movies, as well as text messaging and YouTube casts are
the new everyday norm. As Educators, we must effectively utilize these new technologies in our classrooms and in our online courses. The Master of Education program has brought me to new horizons in educational technology and leadership.
Educators must be mindful of using multimedia technology to enhance their classroom environment
and stimulate learning. Likewise, this technology is to be used as an extension of the teacher, not as a substitute for the teacher. A healthy balance must be maintained in the use of multimedia technologies in education, otherwise the over usage would be deemed a non-productive display of high tech bells, whistles and widgets!
I would like to take this time to give a brief summary of my teaching and work experience. While attending college and studying music education, I taught private voice, trumpet and guitar lessons at a local music
store. Also at this time, I completed 2 to 3 week student teacher observations at Seaman High School, Elmont Elementary Schools, Lowman Hills Elementary School and Topeka High School. Even though they were titled observation sessions, the classroom teachers were happy to fill me in on their lesson plans, let me assist and eventually take the lead with their supervision.
Upon completion of all my music and education course work, I student taught general music and choral music classes at the USD 437 Auburn-Washburn School district including Wanamaker Elementary, Jay Schideler
(Middle School at that time) and Washburn Rural High Schools.
After graduating with a bachelor’s of music education, I taught all 5th through 12th grade, general music, choral, instrumental music and band classes at USD 454 Burlingame School District. I also was the choral
director at Potwin Presbyterian Church and then at Fairlawn Nazarene Church, both in Topeka.
When I decided to pursue a degree in the medical field, I applied and was accepted to the radiology and radiation therapy school. During this time, I continued teaching private music lessons and taught evening guitar
classes for USD 501 Continuing Education Program at Topeka High School. I was very fortunate to be one of two radiation oncology therapists to be offered a full-time position at St. Francis Radiation Oncology Center. After six years of working as a Radiation Therapist I took the opportunity to teach several face-to-face and online radiation therapy courses. During this time frame, I began the Masters of Education program in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Educational Technology.
Recently, I joined the Environmental Scientist staff in the Radiation Control Program at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. I continue to use my teaching skills and knowledge of educational technology in
educating fellow co-workers and educating the professionals I meet while completing environmental/health physics inspections of radiation oncology, medical, chiropractic, dental, veterinarian and industrial facilities (that use
radiation devices). My future plans at KDHE include the implementation of web meeting software for conducting what I call remote “Tele-inspections” of registered radiation device facilities.
My hobbies include walking, swimming, composing, arranging and recording my original music and performing on special occasions.
I live in Topeka, with my wife Cynthia, who is an Occupational Therapist at St. Francis Health Center.
I have two sons, Jesse and Joshua, and one daughter Amanda. My oldest son Jesse was married last November, I have welcomed my new daughter-in-law, Holly to the family.
